A Nasi Lemak Brand Moves Into the Mall
Wak Teni built its name on Malaysian-style nasi lemak at its original Kerobokan restaurant, and the new Discovery Mall branch had one clear brief: keep that warmth inside a concrete mall shell. Mall units offer none of the character a street-side restaurant gets for free, so every bit of atmosphere had to be designed in, from the ceiling down to the chair backs.
Warm Materials Against a Mall Shell
The palette does the heavy lifting. White painted brick softens the walls, a timber-slat ceiling brings the height down to a comfortable dining scale, and woven rattan pendants pool warm light over every table. The chairs are black-framed with rattan webbing, the tabletops mix terrazzo with teak wood edges, and velvet banquettes run along the walls to keep the room feeling settled rather than temporary.
From Rough Model to Approved Render
Before anything went on site, both floors were worked up as SketchUp models first, then developed into photoreal renders once the layout held. The pairs below show the same two views, from massing study to approved design. It is how a mall unit with fixed columns and a fixed stair position gets resolved without surprises on site.
Ground floor counter: working SketchUp model, then the approved render.
Upper-floor dining gallery: working model, then the finished render.
Two Floors, Planned to the Centimetre
The unit stacks a 12 by 8 metre ground floor under a 4 by 12 metre upper dining gallery, linked by a staircase with lit, patterned tile risers. The ground floor carries the counter, the rujak display and the kitchen line with the first run of seating; upstairs, a narrow gallery of banquettes and terrazzo tables looks down over a double-height void, so even the quietest table stays connected to the room below. Every table, column and service path was resolved on plan before construction began.
Ground floor, 12 by 8 metres.
Upper gallery, 4 by 12 metres, overlooking the double-height void.
The Rujak Counter Up Front
The front counter is the brand moment. A bright yellow menu wall runs above it, and a stacked fresh-fruit display sits in view of the mall corridor. The fruit is not decoration: it is the ingredient wall for rujak, one of Wak Teni’s signature menu items, prepared where customers can see it. It gives passers-by a reason to stop that no printed sign could.
Wak Teni at Discovery Mall, Right Now
The design is approved and the unit is currently in construction. In the meantime, Wak Teni is already serving from a temporary food-court spot in the same mall, so the brand is trading while its permanent room takes shape. The renders and plans on this page are the approved design; we will update this page with photography once the restaurant opens.
